In industrial lifting, the brake system is your primary safety feature. When an EOT Crane doesn’t stop precisely where the operator needs it to, it isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a major safety hazard.
At Shakti Crane Industries, we often receive emergency calls regarding “crane drift” or brake failure. Most issues can be traced back to these five common causes.
1. Worn-Out Brake Linings
The brake lining is a “wear and tear” component, similar to brake pads on a vehicle. Over time, the friction material thins out, reducing the stopping force.
The Fix: Include brake lining thickness checks in your monthly maintenance schedule. If the lining hits the manufacturer’s wear limit, replace the set immediately.
2. Improper Brake Gap Adjustment
If the gap between the brake shoe and the drum is too wide, the solenoid will struggle to engage properly, leading to delayed braking. Conversely, if it’s too tight, the brake will drag during operation, causing unnecessary heat.
The Fix: Regularly verify your crane’s specific manual for the recommended gap settings. Adjustment should only be performed by a qualified technician.
3. Oil or Grease Contamination
Oil leaking from a gearbox seal onto the brake drum or shoe is a leading cause of brake slippage.
The Fix: Clean the brake drum and lining with an industrial-grade, non-flammable brake cleaner. Crucially, identify the source of the leak to ensure the contamination does not return.
4. Electrical or Solenoid Faults
Sometimes the mechanical brake is sound, but the electrical signal is failing. A burnt-out solenoid coil or a loose connection in the control panel prevents the brake from releasing when the motor starts.
The Fix: Use a multimeter to verify voltage at the brake coil. If power is missing, trace the wiring to the control panel to identify loose terminals or failed relays.
5. Weak or Broken Brake Springs
The springs provide the mechanical force that keeps the brake applied when the motor is off. Over time, metal fatigue causes these springs to lose tension.
The Fix: If the brake feels “weak” despite a proper gap and clean lining, the springs are likely the culprit. Replace them with matched, high-quality spring sets to ensure uniform pressure.
